As announced earlier, Eason Chan will (hopefully) release 2 Mandarin EPs this year. Additional information, as follows.

- There will be 2 songs in the Taiwanese language written by Luan Dan A Xiang (亂彈阿翔) titled 離家出走 (Run Away From Home) and 我和你 (Me and You)

- Eason says that he has always liked Mayday's 志明與春嬌, so when producer Will Lin approached him suggesting he record a song in Taiwanese, he took on the challenge

Critics Analyze "20th Golden Melody Awards" - Part 2

(Like any other year, Sina comes up with a panel of critics who analyze the likely winners, or who, in their opinions, should be the winners at the Golden Melody Awards. This year's analysis for Best Mandarin Male Artist as follows.)

name/nickname/pen name of critic: choice and/or analysis

Li Wan (李皖): Eason Chan

Ai Di Ren (愛地人): Khalil Fong. The Golden Melody Awards won't neglect him, right? Whether it is word-of-mouth or his melodies, they are of good regards. Not to mention that he isn't as high profile as Jay Chou which makes it easier for judges who want a balance of both mainstream and non-mainstream music.

Amiee Han (韓晶): Khalil Fong. Looking at this year's situation, can it not be him? Can [it not being Khalil] be possible?

Xiong Zi Ang (熊子昂): Eason Chan. Khalil has returned from singing technique back to emotions of a song; however, when compared to Eason, whose technique can no longer be heard in his performances, Khalil's skills are still lacking. If Eason wins, the line that should be said is, "Natural equals beauty."

Lay: Two Hong Kong singers form the top contenders. Khalil and Eason's both use reserved, accepted singing techniques in their albums. It is these high degree of difficulty techniques that truly tests an artist's singing abilities. Taking into account the Golden Melody judging panel's conservative nature, Eason appears to have the edge. However, if Khalil wins everyone will also be happy for him.

Du Hang Lang (獨行狼): Xiao Huang Chi. Leehom Wang and Jay Chou are not attending, so they are "eliminated" from the picture. Khalil did not make it to the second round [of voting] last year, while he barely makes it into the second round this year, so his chance of winning isn't high. Eason and Xiao Huang Chi are possible winners, but I really hope Xiao Huang Chi wins because Eason has already won it once.

Final Assessment:
Eason could win for the second time. After losing out with Admit It (認了吧) last year, Don't Want To Let Go (不想放手) gets him back on track. Not only did he sing his material, he showcased his natural singing quality (不但作品唱之有物,演唱上也突出了陳奕迅收放自如的特質). Making it back to the nominations, it's as if it is a must win.

Critics Analyze "20th Golden Melody Awards" - Part 1

The 20th Taiwan Golden Melody Awards will be held this coming Saturday, June 27, 2009. Before the ceremony takes place this paper invites 10 individuals, including Taiwan record company employees, music critics, radio DJs, etc. to predict the results of the most talked about awards -- Best Mandarin Male Artist, Best Mandarin Female Artist, Best Mandarin Newcomer and Best Mandarin Group. The Best Mandarin Male Artist finds Eason Chan leading the pack with 5 votes, while the Best Mandarin Female Artist finds a tight battle with Sandee Chan barely holding on to the lead with 3 votes and Tsai Chin, Tanya Chua & A-Lin with 2 votes apiece.

The voting panel consists of singer & producer Sky Wu (伍思凱), Chen Guo Hua (陳國華), manager Yao Chien (姚謙), Jiang Cheng Jin (蔣承縉), Chen Zhen Chuan (陳鎮川), Linfair Records executive Wu Yi Fen (吳怡芬), Seed Music general manager Tian Ding Feng (田定豐), DJ and music critic Yuan Yong Xing (袁永興), Dan Ni Si (丹尼斯), Xiao Shu (小樹).

In the Best Mandarin Male Artist category, 5 judges give Eason Chan their votes. Jiang Cheng Jin and Chen Zhen Chuan agree that Eason's singing skills are at a high caliber of technical proficiency where few are able to match. Chen Guo Hua praises that Eason has returned to the origins by creating minimalist music and although Xiao Huang Chi's music runs a similar path, Eason's emotional interpretations are a bit more adept and natural. Dan Ni Si and Sky Wu don't question Eason's singing skills, however, they feel it is a pity that his album didn't have a "super hit" song.

Jay Chou and Khalil Fong each received two votes apiece. Yao Chien and Tian Ding Feng feel that Khalil's album ushers in a new generation of music, leading former non-mainstream music towards mainstream with a superior performance. Sky Wu and Wu Yi Fen feel Jay's music is whole and he has always had a "music attitude."

Constance Chan Too Expensive to Invite as Guest Performer

In promoting his Moving On Stage 24 - Beijing Part II concert, Eason Chan was asked about rumors that his wardrobe stylist is wife Hilary Tsui. Eason laughed that she has been taken away from him by daughter Constance Chan, saying, "She is now Miss Chan's manager, in charge of her everyday life and school." This past father's day Eason's present was a phone call from his daughter. When asked about his daughter's music abilities, he answers, "When she watches concerts she gets real into it. She listens to all types of music such as rock, classical, children's songs, she is a child who loves music. One day, she was in her room imitating Madonna's dance moves, moving all around." When asked whether he has thought about inviting his daughter as a guest performer, Eason firmly answers, "No, she's too expensive."

Eason Accepts Awards and Joins the Association

Eason & Ashin (@ Mayday)

On June 16, 2009, Eason Chan attended the Music Workers in Taiwan Annual Ten Best Albums and Ten Best Songs Awards Ceremony (中華音樂人交流協會年度十大專輯和十大單曲頒獎典禮), where he was awarded one of the top 10 albums for Don't Want To Let Go (不想放手) and two of the top 10 songs for 不要說話 and 倒帶人生. To express his support, upon accepting his award, he took out $1,000 as payment for his member fee, whereby becoming the first member from Hong Kong. In addition, he asked, "Aside from a members fee, is there anything else I need to contribute? Can I now listen to non-mainstream music before it's released?"

Eason was extremely happy to be able to meet and talk with other musicians. At the ceremony, he saw Mayday's Ashin (阿信) who he had previously asked for a song. However, Ashin hasn't given him anything yet and not giving up, Eason says, "Wait is needed for good songs."

As for the state of his vocal chord, he says it is a lot better and he is currently practicing his Taiwanese-language song 我和你 (Me and You) for his upcoming Mandarin album, but the nasal resonance of the Taiwanese language is leaving him tongue tied.

Admiring Eason: Rainie Yang 楊丞琳

On November 7, 2007, Taiwan's Jolin Tsai and Rainie Yang 楊丞琳 made special appearances at TVB's Jade Solid Gold weekly program. Eason Chan, who both Jolin and Rainie call their idol, was also present at the program. The two posed with Eason for pictures and Rainie later says, "I wanted to hug Eason and was close to doing so, but didn't because he is a veteran and I need to respect him. When Eason goes to Taipei to perform in concert, I will be there in the audience to support him." In regards to Rainie wanting to hug him, Eason responds "Really? Too bad." He was then asked whether the 'too bad' is for him being a veteran to them [and therefore not being able to get the hug], which he answers, "Yes, I am not afraid to say they are newcomers and that I am a veteran to them."

Taiwan's Rainie Yang made an appearance in Hong Kong on December 24, 2007 for an autograph session in connection with her new album promotion. During the promotion she was asked what she wishes for in the New Year, she says she hopes that she can film more series and movies while improving on her performance and acting. Her company is currently in talks for getting her a new movie to act in and could possibly involve a Hong Kong director. When asked which Hong Kong actor she wants to work with most, she immediately answers she wants to work with Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Eason Chan most.

When the host asked Rainie who was her prince (during an audience princess and prince selection segment), the audience screamed 'Mike He.' Rainie laughed while saying "Of course not, my prince would have to have Tony Leung Chiu Wai's captivating eyes and Eason Chan's musicial talent and humor."

On June 11, 2009, Eason Chan held his Same Wrong Sin Concert with Swing and Mr. Good friends Wyman Wong, William So and Denise Ho were in attendance, as were wife Hilary Tsui and daughter Constance Chan. As reporters approached Constance to take pictures, she cleverly used what was in her hand to cover her face. When Eason saw the swarm of reporters surrounding his daughter, he waved his hands towards them indicating for them to leave her alone. For the show, Eason wore the facial hair featured on H3M's album cover.

During the show, Eason revealed that he asked to be a guest performer at Wong Ka Keung & Paul Wong's upcoming concert, saying, "I called Paul expressing my interest in being a guest. I had real "thick skin" to recommend myself, but opportunities are out there for you to grab!" Eason performed Faye Wong's 開到荼靡 & Wong Ka Keung's 麻醉 during the show and performed an encore.

At the post-concert celebration, having performed through the night and ended up with a raspy voice, Eason joked, "I shouldn't have benefited them in Taiwan by performing for 4 hours." He then explained he visited a doctor two days ago and was told that his vocal chord should be white in color, however his present vocal cord was red and swollen among other things. Due to the severity, he was told to immediately quit smoking and to take steroids. Eason says, "Because I can't hold back when I sing live there was no other choice, but I don't take it (steroids) often so don't worry." When asked if his daughter recognized him with his facial hair on, he answered, "She recognizes me, but refuses to give me a kiss."

After the show, Eason, Hilary, Constance and William So went to Wan Chai for a midnight meal. At 1 in the morning, fans were still around holding up paper to block cameras from taking pictures of their idol.

Admiring Eason: Shin 信

This year, neither Shin 信 nor Eason Chan came up winners at the Taiwan Golden Melody Awards in the Best Male Artist category, but both men say being nominated is enough. On the night of the 7th, Shin held a mini concert, titled 金曲盡信 (Believe in Hits, literally translated), where his fans encouraged him and presented him with a crystal award trophy. Shin says his "Song King" is Eason and his "Song Queen" is A-mei. Shin says his friendship with Eason goes back 8 years when he was the back-up singer at Eason's concert. During the night, Shin performed Eason's 愛情轉移 with imitation, which was funny and exaggerated.

Eason, Swing [Eric Kwok (m), Jerald (r)]

Yesterday, Eason Chan rehearsed for his upcoming Metroinfo Hosts Eason Chan Same Wrong Sin Concert, to be held June 11, 2009. Due to a recent emergence of students taking drugs, Metroinfo kicked off their No Drugs (我自愛, 不吸毒) campaign with Eason and his upcoming concert guests Swing and Mr. The campaign will feature 50 artists recording a "no drugs" message.

As for the recent surge in students taking drugs, Eason responds, "Maybe cigarettes are too expensive. I haven't tried drugs, but there are a lot of things that tastes better than drugs, for example, "pineapple" buns (菠蘿包)." When asked if he has friends who take drugs, Eason answers, "Not many. If they don't listen to my advice, I would distance myself from them. A person's reputation is important and I wouldn't want to be mistaken to take part in it [drugs]." He then gives an idea on how people can be excited without taking drugs, "You will be very excited if you are sleep deprived." He was then asked, due to his lack of sleep, 'So you are always high?!" Eason answers, "I'm naturally high. Depriving yourself of sleep costs nothing, just have fun with your friends and go karaoke."

Eason Chan, Guest at George Lam's Concert

George Lam held two shows of his Lam @ Coliseum Concert (十分十二子祥演唱會) at Hong Kong Coliseum from June 5-6, 2009. The first night attracted industry stars Andy Hui, William So, Eason Chan, Anthony Wong Yiu Ming, Fama and others. Family who watched him in concert include wife Sally Yeh, his son and mother. Hins Cheung was the guest performer of the night.

George spotted Eason sitting in the audience and pulled him onto the stage. Eason, who was wearing a pink tee, polka dot jeans, flip flops, and hair which was a bit messy, was immediately made fun of, "Did you just wake up?," George asked. Eason immediately responded, "This will be the trend in 2012." The two then performed George's hit 數字人生. George then lifted Eason's tee to reveal Eason's "meat" and laughed that he indeed had a lot of "meat," causing the audience erupt in laughter.

Full Time Acting on Eason's Mind

After committing many years to music, Hong Kong singer, Eason Chan, is considering turning his attention towards acting. He felt the change would allow him to stay in the entertainment industry well into the years. Eason felt that there will also be more chances to discover new talents for the industry.

Eason confessed that he is not a professional actor. Because of commitments to other areas of work, he lacks the time to fully study and build the characters he portrays. As such, he ends up playing characters closer to his off screen personality most of the time.

To Eason, every film shot is a learning experience. On the sets of Corrupt All Cops, he was able to meet many like-minded people, with a passion for acting. Other than honing his acting skills, he also gained knowledge in other areas as well. Hong Kong writer, Chan Koon Chung's books were recommended to him by Anthony Wong, with whom Eason often discusses books with on set.

Eason commented, "I'll put more time into acting in the future. Singing is dependent on one's state of health (stamina), especially in concerts where you can't rely on others for your own performance. In acting, the performance can be enhanced with acting skills and emotions, there are also stunt doubles. And besides, there are only a handful of singers that last till they are over 70 years old, unlike actors, on the other hand, of which there are quite a number of them!"

Eason at Mayday's "D.N.A. World Tour" Hong Kong Stop

Eason with Mayday

Eason, the fan (r); Wyman (l, in black); Hilary Tsui (sitting, in pink)

Mayday (consisting of members Ashin, Monster, Stone, Masa & Guan You) held their 2009 D.N.A. World Tour Hong Kong stop, from May 20 to May 22, 2009 at Hong Kong Coliseum. Wyman Wong, Hilary Tsui, and Eason Chan attended the last show as audience members.

Eason arrived midway through the show and caused an uproar as he entered. Mayday entered into a yelling match with the audience to see who would yell louder and Eason had much fun during that segment. During the show, Ashin said, "I do not know Eason well, I just admire him the way you guys (the audience) do." Eason got up and yelled back in response. During the post-concert celebration, Mayday was asked why they didn't invite Eason onstage. Ashin answered, "If we invited him I'm certain we would have to prepare $100,000 HKD [for fines due to going over time at Hong Kong Coliseum] and would be blacklisted. However, band member Masa was extremely excited just seeing Eason in the audience."

During the show, the audience wanted to see Mayday dance, so Ashin joked, "If you guys want to see dancing, go watch Fahrenheit (飛輪海); if you guys want to see good-looking guys, go watch F4; if you guys want to see a bad dancing band you've come to the right show! There is something wrong with your mindsets, why would you want to watch bad dancing?!"
