Eason Chosen to be Mother-in-Law

Yesterday, singers attended the 30th RTHK Music Awards' press conference. In celebration of 30 years of their music award, RTHK organized an artist voting segment where each artist voted for their "music family" in coordination with this year's theme of "We Are Family." The results of the voting revealed Hacken Lee as the father, Eason Chan as the mother (mother-in-law), Leo Ku as the eldest son, Miriam Yeung as the wife (daughter-in-law), Joey Yung as the daughter, and Kelvin Kwan as the servant. After being crowned the mother-in-law, Eason played around with the removable mole he was given, placing it at different places on his face and even onto Kay Tse's face.

Each singer was asked, then answered, regarding this year's awards and their possible outcome.

Hacken responds that hopes he can win the Gold Song Award and feels that Eason's Crying in the Party, Hins Cheung's 酷愛 and his own 花落誰家 has the highest chance of winning. He feels that Eason has the highest chance of winning the Male Singer Award.

Miriam responds that she only had one album so she has very few songs that made it on top of the charts, but she would make Leon Lai, A-Music boss, happy by winning just one award. She further says that no one will know what the outcome will be until the end, and until the end comes she will continue to promote herself.

Joey responds she will go into the awards as usual and saying, "of course I'll be happy if I win awards, but I won't be disappointed if I don't win."

Leo responds he feels Justin, Eason, Hins and himself have the highest chances of winning the Male Singer Award. When asked regarding Paco Wong, Gold Label Manager, not helping Justin push for awards because of his bad attitude, Leo defended Justin in saying that Justin's attitude is perfectly fine.

Eason responds two years ago he went into the awards with high expectations only to be disappointed at the end. He won numerous big awards last year, but was at a lost for direction in his music. Being in the industry for over 10 years, he now hopes he can thank his company's employees. When told he is expected to be the big winner at the end of the year, he responds that he isn't particularly happy after being told such news, but if he can help his company win some awards then he'll be happy. He feels the employees at his company work extremely hard, so if he wins awards it's an indication that the employees' hard work paid off.

Andy Hui, who was at a separate event, was also asked regarding the awards. He responds, "I think Eason has the highest chance of winning the Male Singer Award, we've witnessed the success he's had this year."

Wednesday night, Eric Suen was at TVB for the recording of JSG where he was asked regarding his position at this year's award ceremonies. He responds, "I am very happy with my results this year, but I am not going to think too much of the Male Singer Award. I think Eason has the highest chance of winning; when I go around the world to places where they know of Hong Kong singers, they know Eason. I hope that, in the future, I will be recognized like he is."

1˚ of Eason Chan: Swing (Eric Kwok & Jerald Chan)

Six degrees of separation is the idea that everyone is no further than 6 "steps" away from each other, or the more commonly used explanation, everyone is connected through six people (a.k.a. six degrees).

Six degrees requires too much thinking; therefore, we're going to keep it simple with one degree.

凸 - Eason, Eric, Edison in Concert (Jerald as music director)

1˚-- As a group, Swing and Eason are connected through their former company, Music Plus. As individuals, Eric's first song for Eason was in 1999, 貝多芬與我, which would be followed by the hit 幸福摩天輪 that same year. There is no indication that Jerald and Eason have worked together before their time at Music Plus, so it is believed that Music Plus was their first encounter. After disbanding, Swing would work together again on Eason's 2006 EP Life Continues, as writers, arrangers and producers. Swing would again work together, in early 2007, during the concert 加州紅903黃金組合音樂會 - 凸 (California Red 903 Golden Group Mini Concert - 凸) where Eason, Eric and Edison were performers and Jerald was the music director.

1984 - Swing

Background -- Eric Kwok and Jerald Chan are two individual songwriters, arrangers, producers, musicians & singers turned singing / songwriting / arranging / producing duo. Formed under the name Snowman in 1999, the duo would later change their name to Swing and join Music Plus (under EEG) in 2000.

The duo released their first album, under the name Swing, in October 2000 and in 2001, won the Chik Chak 903's Band/Duo/Group - Gold Award and the TVB's Jade Solid Gold Favorite Group - Bronze Award.

After releasing their final album, Swing Swang Swung, in 2002 the duo received permission to terminate their artist contract with Music Plus and the two went their separate ways. It is unknown as to why the duo ended their partnership, though it is believed that Jerald did not enjoy being in the spotlight. Eric had previously thanked Jerald for giving up a lot in order for the duo to be created.

Afterwards, it is believed that Jerald continued to work behind-the-scenes, most notably for Juno Mak and more recently for Kary Ng. Eric continued to write and produce music, he then joined the label Silly Thing and released his first solo album.

The two would rejoin in 2006 to help write, arrange and produce the 2006 EP Life Continues with Wyman Wong and Eason. In March 2007, the two would set foot on the same stage and perform together again at the California Red 903 Golden Group Mini Concert - 凸. The concert featured Eason, Edison Chen and Eric as performers and they sought Jerald to be the concert's music director. During the concert, Jerald and Eric were reunited on stage where Jerald, filled with emotion, shed tears.

Eric continues to use the name Snowman Production Ltd. Jerald now uses Jerald Ltd.

Admiring Eason: Jay Chou 周杰倫

In the Chinese music industry, it seems as if everyone wants to be a part of Jay Chou's 周杰倫 music and bask in his name. In Eason Chan's newest Mandarin album, Admit It, Jay plays a part as he composed and penned the song 淘汰. So has it come down to even Eason needing to use Jay Chou's name to promote himself? Eason explains, "Contrary to popular belief, it was Jay who came up to me and asked how I felt if he wrote a song for me." Eason highly admires Jay's abilities as he continues to explain, "It happened at an award ceremony, he came up next to me and said he wanted to write a song for me." Jay quickly went and wrote the song, in about a month's time he finished writing the song and sent it to Eason. "When Jay came to Hong Kong to promote his new album he asked me, 'So how is it? Did you listen to it yet?' and I had to explain to him I was busy filming and didn't even get to open the package yet, but once I listened to it I'd give him a call," Eason recalls. Jay understood and was not upset, even saying, "I wrote this song for you, even if you wait 10 years, it's still your song."

Getting ready for his upcoming Shanghai concert on November 24, 2007, Jay Chou says he will only invite male singers to be his guest singers at this concert to avoid further rumors with female singers. He says he has already invited the male group Nan Quan Mama and will invite one more male singer. Eason Chan would be his choice. Having written many songs for other singers, Jay was asked whose interpretation of his songs he was most satisfied with. Without hesitation Jay immediately names Eason, saying, "because he best interprets my feelings in the songs I write." Jay goes on to say "When you look at [Eason's] face it looks weak, but I really want to help him shoot an MV because I can create a story with his face."

News Wrap for Week 11.18.2007 - 11.24.2007

Eason Chan was at the rehearsal for the McDonald's World Children's Day event in Hong Kong, where he revealed he will be performing Anita Mui & Leslie Cheung's classic, 芳華絕代, with Joey Yung. "There won't be another person that can perform this song [better than Anita Mui & Leslie Cheung]! I'm just trying to challenge myself and not trying to out-do anyone." When asked whether he will be dancing closely to Joey during the performance (as Anita and Leslie did during their performances), Eason laughs "It depends on what she wears. If she wears a tube top then no, I'm afraid it will fall off. But yes if she's wearing a Qipao (cheongsam)."

Eason says he's learning to set a good example for his daughter by helping others. He says he has a wealthy friend who expressed his interest in donating money to charity and admires his friend's attitude of wanting to donate his money instead of purchasing nice cars. Eason says he has no interest in purchasing nice cars and he has been using his current car for the past 7 years. He further says, when a person gets to a certain age they learn to give to others. If we make 3,000 then donate 100.

Asked whether he will be working with Sammi Cheng on a new film, Eason admits that they are indeed going to work together, they are looking at the script at the moment.

Ivana Wong will be releasing a Mandarin album soon. Ivana reveals that she received the same advice from Andy Lau, Jacky Cheung and Eason Chan, which was "Don't be afraid, just be yourself." She then said Eason gave her advice while imitating her voice, which she found extremely funny.

Eason was spotted having a midnight meal with wife Hilary Tsui and other friends, including Edmond Leung and his girlfriend. After the meal, Eason was seen leaving with another woman in a taxi, leaving Hilary behind. It is then noted that during the meal Eason and Hilary had very little contact and when Eason left with another woman, Hilary didn't seem to care.

Contrary to what reporters originally thought, Eason and Hilary were not have an argument. Eason left without Hilary because he was heading to a meeting in connection with his work related trip to Australia, where he will be heading after the meeting. He purposely met up with Hilary for the midnight meal before the meeting and flight. According to Hilary, Eason will be in Australia for a couple of weeks for work.

Half a month after the conclusion of Eason's Moving On Stage 1 concerts, fake tees have surfaced online as a "special edition," with the Listen to Eason Chan bubble on one side and Eason's Moving On Stage 1 on the other side. These fake tees are using Eason's name, concert name and album name to sell at a higher price than the real tees. With these fake tees, Eason's company issued a statement urging fans to be careful of fake merchandise being sold online.

The only tees released to the public in connection to Eason's concert and album are:
(1) 'Listen to Eason Chan' bubble tees (worn by Eason above) in 8 colors, by Pepe Jeans, for promotional purposes only and are not sold.
(2) Moving On Stage 1 character tee with 'Moving On Stage 1' printed on the back (as shown above in green & white) in 6 colors, by Milk, sold at 220 HKD each.

Random: Changes to Layout

Note: Eason is going on a world tour next year, so if you're interested in seeing him in concert check out his schedule (on the right) to see if he's coming to a city near you. the schedule will be updated as more information is announced.

The rest of this post has nothing to do with Eason, so read as you wish.

changes
- background color, from charcoal to black
- color "theme", from yellow to green
- blog title, from words to pictures

why the change?
don't ask, there's no logical reason

why yellow previously?
this blog was created a little over a month after the 2007 MLB All-Star Game where MVP, Ichiro Suzuki, looked oh-so-charming in this suit and yellow tie. you can view a picture of Suzuki here, but you can't clearly see the color of the tie. if you watched the game, you would've seen it, and you would've seen how charming he looked. pretty random, eh?

why green now?
the yellow was becoming annoyingly bright, so a change in color was needed. since the color theme to Eason's Moving on Stage 1 was green, green it is.

why those pictures or that picture, depending on how you view it?
don't be mistaken, the 2 pictures of Eason were not chosen to match the green font. they were chosen because that outfit is my favorite of all outfits Eason had on during his concerts. The sharp emerald green stands out, more so than the earlier fuchsia ribbon, and the peacock tail is absolutely beautiful. more importantly, the sharp green ribbon and peacock tail are perfectly matched. thumbs up for Wyman!

when and what's the next color theme?
when the next change and what color is unknown. any suggestions?

Eason to the media: "Do Not Accuse Me!"; ORBIS Event

Yesterday afternoon, as ORBIS' Sight Ambassador, Eason Chan took a tour of ORBIS' Vision Plane, where he met with two patients and conversed with them. Earlier, reports surfaced that Eason rejected to be a guest performer at Sam Hui's concert in order to be a guest at Jay Chou's concert. Eason was asked regarding these reports, at the ORBIS event, where he replied, "I know how you (the media) work, I know you like to stir up rumors, but fact is, Sam Hui and Jay Chou's concerts are held on different days. I am certain I cannot make it to Sam Hui's concert because there is a conflict in schedule, as for Jay Chou's concert, I cannot say right now. I do not want any misunderstandings of me helping one but not the other." He then reiterated, "Do not accuse me!"

Elsewhere, Eason expressed his interest in creating his own charitable foundation, saying about himself, "When you reach a certain age and have experienced many things in life, you get motivated by other things [other than money]. You can't spend it all anyway, so you should learn to earn and give back."

"Based on the few days working with Eason Chan in this trip, I find him a very genuine kind man. This trip had not only brought light to many blind eyes in the farming villages in Sichuan China, it has also brought warmth to the hearts of everyone in the crew from Hong Kong. Please give your support to Project Orbis to continue their great efforts in bringing light to those who are suffering in darkness immediately!"

The encore song 親近, as some of you may recognize, is this year's theme song to TVB's Fathers and Sons. Eason chose to sing the song because it was written (music and lyrics) by one of the band members, Kubert Leung; it was also Eason's opportunity to give Kubert a solo and center stage next to him.

Stage 2, Eason's Career After "Moving On Stage 1"

Remember when Eason said Moving On Stage 1 can mean two things? One being that Eason is ready to move on, past stage 1 and onto stage 2 of his career. So what exactly are Eason's plan after Moving On Stage 1?

When his Moving On Stage 1 concerts are over Eason will have a couple of days off so he can spend time with his family, but between those days he will have some other work to do. Afterwards, in December, he will promote his Listen to Eason Chan album in Mainland and will probably film with Sammi Cheng. Eason says his new album, using dance songs as the theme, is a new experience for him, but it is also aimed towards the Mainland market. His future albums will probably focus more on Mandarin music [and market].

Capital Artists' Artists "Move On Stage 1"; Show Fined For Running Overtime

Two nights ago, Eason's Moving On Stage 1's 14 straight shows came to an end with former Capital Artists' artists, Edmond Leung, Miriam Yeung, Denise Ho and Wilfred Lau, making a special appearance. During the final show Eason performed 10 songs for the encore which ended at 12:05 am, going overtime, and being fined a 6 figure sum (presumably 600,000 HKD).

For the final show a special karaoke segment was introduced and was hosted by Eason himself. When it was Deborah Lai's turn to choose a song, she chose 謝謝儂, and it was then when the 4 former Capital Artists' artists went on stage to become Eason's backup dancers.

The 4 of them intended on dragging Hilary Tsui onto the stage with them, but Hilary insisted on not going on stage and they left it at that. But when the audience asked Eason to thank Hilary he complied and said "Thank you [Hilary], you are really really good." Band leader Pal Sinn joined in on the fun when he suddenly asked "How is she good?" Eason responded "You don't need to know. If she's good then she's good, there's no need for a reason." When he performed 綿綿, he said "My wife says this song is boring and told me to cut it. If you guys (the audience) don't think it's boring then it's okay. Sorry [Hilary] I'm going to sing it anyway." Eason got back at Pal Sinn by revealing that he will be getting married soon.

At the post-concert celebration ceremony Eason says he didn't perform too well during the first couple of shows but seeing the positive reaction from the audience and seeing the celebrities taking time out to watch his shows he was extremely happy. Overall, he was satisfied with the concerts.

As for the concert running overtime and being fined, Eason takes a breath before saying "I don't care. I've been running overtime for the past couple of shows, if there's [money] going out then there will be [money] coming in. If it comes down to it, I'll pay it out of my own pocket." When reporters informed him that it was a 6 figure sum, Eason changes his mind and says "Someone will cover it." When asked if manager Katie Chan will cover it, Eason answers "I'll work harder to cover the cost."

Additionally, in April 2008 Eason will be holding concerts in Shanghai and Beijing.

Also, in January 2008 Eason will be holding a concert in Taiwan. This will be the "official" final leg of his Admit It tour. Problems came up when the Taiwan leg of his Admit It tour was planned this year, so the show has been pushed to January.

For those who are wondering why they already held a post-concert celebration with 2 shows left, the final 2 shows are sponsored by the 2009 East Asian Games and not Johnnie Walker.

Composer Chan Siu Ha Talks About Eason Chan

Mainland China composer turned singer Chan Siu Ha 陳小霞 (Salsa Chen) did an interview with sohu revealing her experiences as a composer for 20+ years. Here is the segment where she talks about her experience and collaboration with Eason Chan, whom she wrote Ten Years 十年 (the Mandarin version of Next Year Today 明年今日) for.

Question: In all the singers whom you've worked with, who do you feel you worked best with or who you feel happy working with?

Chan Siu Ha: I think I should put it like this, [there was a point in time (10+ years ago)] when I decided to no longer produce albums so my interaction with singers was minimized. I then wrote and produced 3 songs for Eason [in 2003] and people asked "why?" Eason has previously sung my Cantonese songs and when he first promoted himself in Taiwan I paid attention to him. I realized he was a good singer but the company he was with then [Capital Artists] didn't get him good exposure. They didn't choose songs for him, their promotion wasn't good and they didn't get any attention. In Hong Kong [before 2003] I realized he must be a good singer in order for him to have the status he had. One day he called me and asked if I would help him produce. I said, 'the nerve of you! didn't you hear that I was no longer producing albums?' But his personality was what I liked, he was straight-forward and willing to say what he felt. Communication was not a problem, we talked for a short half an hour and I already knew, in my heart, that I would help him. And I would help him for one reason only - if I gave up the opportunity to work with such a great singer there's no guarantee that I will ever encounter such a great singer again, and it was then that I told him I would help him. Eason Chan's album (Black White Grey 黑.白.灰) is probably the last album I will help produce.

Question: Is Ten Years 十年 biggest hit you've composed?

Chan Siu Ha: Probably at this moment, but in terms of sales I don't know if Faye Wong plus Zhou Hui's 約定 sales are greater or about the same as 十年's sales, but from what I heard they are about the same.

Question: Back to Eason as a singer you're happy working with.

Chan Siu Ha: Yes, I like his sensitivity towards music. Being in the recording studio with him I saw something in him that was different from others at his young age, and it is his feeling towards music. I don't know what everyone's interpretation of "feeling towards music" is, if it is interpreted as feeling "high" then it is emptiness. "Feeling towards music" is, if you give him a song and tell him to record 100 different versions of it, he can do it; if you tell him to give you 10 different feelings, he can do it; but at the end after many different tries and many different versions, the final feeling is the correct feeling. If a singer doesn't have the heart for music, he would not be able to have such "feeling towards music." It involves a lot of time and a lot of energy to find the correct direction before you can say "ok, let's start recording."

Eason's Showing Off...

...the band.

The one thing everyone realizes or will come to realize, whether a fan of Eason Chan or not, is his appreciation for all the behind-the-scenes music crew. While most other singers are trying to justify their win, or trying to explain the false reporting by the media, or trying to explain their hardships over the course of the year in their award acceptance speeches, Eason's first and foremost priority is thanking all the people who work for him behind-the-scenes. Eason has always thanked the composers, lyricists, arrangers & producers because its protocol, but he has begun to thank all the behind-the-scenes production people (who almost never get thanked), the musicians that record his songs and even the production companies. More recently, Eason expressed his hopes of more singers thanking the aforementioned.

All talk and no action means nothing.

So, for Moving On Stage 1, Eason is showing off his band. Giving them solo performances, giving them the center stage, giving them a platform and space to stand on and here are the pictures to prove it:

Band members for Moving On Stage 1 include: Davy Chan, C.Y. Kong, Kubert Leung, Joey Tang, Gary Tong, etc. (or so I've seen and read)

edit: according to Davy Chan, the band members to Moving On Stage 1 include Pal, Joey, Yin, Anthony, Gary, Pat & CY

"Moving On Stage 1" Fashion by Wyman Wong

Wyman Wong is in charge of the fashion at Eason's Moving On Stage 1's 16 shows where he says, "The biggest theme to the outfits is the clothes of a male singer adding the element of female fashion. I don't know if this theme will turn out to be as stylish as Leslie Cheung has made it or whether it will turn out to be funny like Donald (I Love You Boyz) made it, anything can happen on stage. Eason has also expressed that it doesn't matter how it turns out." Wyman says he did not get paid for this project saying, "I'd rather give up my pay and add it to the spending budget, at least I can go all out and cut up a Dior Homme instead of a Kitterick."

Traditional Dragon-Phoenix Wedding Attire x Athletic Wear

Hip Hop Chinese Tracksuit by Tomas Chan
Air Force One by Nike
Gold Jewelry by Chow Tai Fook

Wyman: Every artist that holds a concert looks for a diamond sponsor, which ends up being a game of dollar figures and is no longer original. This look is me wanting to see Bollywood at Hong Kong Coliseum. This outfit is extremely heavy with the 100 ounces of gold, the bicycle chain itself is about 1.84 kg.

Man and Wife

Wedding Gown inspired by Impasse 13

Wyman: This look came upon me when, in July, I unintentionally bumped into an Impasse 13 showroom in Paris. They've helped Dior and Dior Homme design accessories for many years and has now created their own label. I attempted to [without anything to lose] ask them to design a similar outfit for Eason and they actually said yes. The veil is designed by exclusive Dior headpiece designer Stephen Jones.

English + Japanese =

Vintage Japanese Kimono
Vintage Trench Coat by Burberry

Wyman: In July, after viewing a men's line in Paris, I went to Tokoyo to look at vintage Japanese kimonos. This outfit is a vintage Japanese kimono attached to a vintage Burberry trench coat.

Learn English thru Encore

Slogan Tee by Wyman Wong

Wyman: I thought up of a few tees for Eason, you could say they are a variation of House of Holland slogan tees. These tees are the English titles to a number of songs Eason will be performing during the encores. They are plastic printed block letters.

Androgyny

Headpiece by Stephen Jones
Suit by Dior Homme
Dress Shirt and Bow by Impasse 13
Cape by Wyman Wong and Tomas Chan

Wyman: This outfit is Dior Homme meets Valentino. This outfit represents the luxury of the stage and integrating men and women's fashion. We purchased a tens of thousands of dollars' Dior Homme suit and cut it up, keeping only the shoulders and neck piece, then we worked on adding everything else to it. Earlier, Eason went to London in June and left information of his head size along with DVD's of his previous concerts with Stephen Jones, who created this headpiece.
