"Moving On Stage 1" Part II? See you in 2010

night 4

As Eason Chan's Moving On Stage 1 concerts continue, it is noted that changes have been and will be made to the stage for each show. Night 4, four to five steps were added to the stairs, the black viewing screen was pushed to the highest possible height in the Coliseum, and the lighting of the stage and the effects have also changed. In effect, making it the highest stage at Hong Kong Coliseum this century. Kaite Chan reveals the production costs from night 1 to night 4 has increased by 10%, totaling to a six-figure sum.

Having 16 shows and still not enough tickets to go around, Katie Chan was asked whether they will have a part II. Katie responds, "There are other singers having concerts. Next year Eason will start his tour and will take some time out during the middle of the year to plan his next album. The first half of 2009, we hope, will be used for filming. We will probably start planning another HK Coliseum concert during the second half of 2009, so 2010 will probably be the earliest you can expect to see Eason at HK Coliseum."

"Listen to Eason Chan" -- A Critique

Listen to Eason Chan -- a critique
by Hong Kong music media award critic 九時用茶

If I were to say that Eason Chan is, at this moment, Hong Kong music's most anticipated mainstream singers I believe there will be many who would agree, which is why every time he gets ready to release an album there will be countless discussions -- as noted earlier in the year when Admit It was considered an "industry" album. Of course, regardless of how Eason's albums turn out, it will not be bad and the so-called "industry" album is just another discussion topic. I believe, not including Juno Mak and those alike, once you have established yourself with mainstream music you no longer need to create music for a "breakthrough" but rather, create the music you wants to and that is a singer's greatest success.

If we are going to look at it from that point of view, What's Going On...? and Admit It can be considered creative failures because both albums fail to have Eason's creativeness -- they can be compared to premature births in production and in concept. Not all failures are bad, failure comes with experience and because of those experiences this year's Listen to Eason Chan comes will full praise.

Listen to Eason Chan is a job well done.

If simply critiquing this album were enough there would be nothing much to say, like there are no lyrics included with the album in hopes that listeners will use their hearts to feel the music. In order to critique this album I feel there is no need to point out where this album is good because the album itself is good.

But there are certain matters that stirs one's curiosity. Why is it that Joe Lee, Riley Lam & Conrad Wong, in Eason's album, are able to demonstrate quality beyond those at their level? I personally feel the lyrics of Joe Lee in Mario Party 瑪利奧派對 and of Riley Lam in Wheel of the Era 時代巨輪 are their personal highest quality lyrics to date; and Conrad Wong, who rarely writes fast songs, is able to create such a highly danceable and rhythmic samba dance song where the melodies and instruments are matched maturely, showing no signs that this is a first time genre for him.

For a lyricist who we rarely see eVa Chan demonstrates writing at a top notch level. In Flash 閃, she complexly writes of the relationship between an artist and gossip media reporter. Not having Wyman Wong pen the lyrics to Concert Live Gig 演唱會 is a regret because he is the "master" at penning concert theme songs, as noted with 隆重登場, 光明會, etc. But in a high quality production, is this even a problem? We are even willing to neglect the emptiness in Law Siu's Maniacal Revolution 狂熱革命 because the album is originally intended for listening of music and Eason's voice, the lyrics are just a bonus.

With that we should mention that in an album that uses lyrics as a bonus, its lyrics are of higher quality that lyrics belonging singers who use lyrics as their selling point, and that is something that can't ever be explained. In many people's eyes Eason is considered a "good man" in the industry, but his work frequently revolves around the topic of "sex." Even before Lin Xi's Tropical Island Serenade 熱島小夜曲, Eason is the singer with the most work revolving around the topic of "sex." These contradictions may be explained in Chow Yiu Fai's The Chameleon 變色龍. When taken as the conclusion of Exaggerated 浮誇 and Low Profile 低調, The Chameleon 變色龍 is probably Eason's years of experience all summed up.

Maybe because he is a Chameleon which enables him to create such outstanding music. Eason is not a true singer-songwriter and because of that he is able to pick out different frameworks and create additional possibilities. Since Shall We Dance? Shall We Talk!'s strings to rock to electronica to Listen to Eason Chan's dance, he has be able to transition between these mainstream genres and styles easily, with the exception of R&B which he has been avoiding. Eason's biggest weapon is, where trouble arises for many other singers, he has been able to transition into them with ease and use them to his advantage.

It is because of that, his choice of musicians are greater and more daring than other artists. He can look for Davy [Chan], C.Y. [Kong], Eric [Kwok], Carl [Wong] and others who have been working with him for a long time or, he can personally look for the English band Spandau Ballet's producer Tony Swain to produce a track that is full of English flavor in Waterloo Station 滑鐵盧車站 or, look for a former songwriter who stopped writing for many years, Michael Lai, to write Crying in the Party for him. Eason's greatest success comes from not restraining himself with one style and it is the reason for his status in the industry today. From his start with Keith Chan, Carl Wong & Eric Kwok to today's Davy Chan & C.Y. Kong era, we can easily identify the different styles of each producer, but we are also able to identify a similar style behind each producer and that is the Eason Chan style.

We now take a look back at Listen to Eason Chan where we cannot say there aren't any flaws. I feel Flash 閃, Concert Live Gig 演唱會 and Maniacal Revolution 狂熱革命 can be done better, and as a dance album the rhythm should be more intense but this problem is solved with the remix disc. Looking at the remix disc as an individual disc, the full disco-mix is no longer market-friendly and finding the center between disc 1 & 2 is ultimately the best choice.

On another note, the operation of Listen to Eason Chan is not suitable for all singers. In this album, there is not one true karaoke song -- not even Crying in the Party, in its first batch 20,000 limited edition copies in 8 colors and different materials were produced, a free copy of the remix disc was provided and no lyrics were included with the album. These factors, whether for commercial purposes or for profits, are risky and if it were not a singer of Eason's status it would not be considered.

From a newcomer to being in the industry for over 10 years and being where he is now, if he had given up on his beliefs in music because of the risks involved he would probably not be able to have the freedom in music he has today. No one would question there was a time where he lost his freedom, but at the very least we saw that he made the most out of whatever freedom he was given. Blindly following the market will only result in being rejected by the market. In the Hong Kong music industry, the reason Eason was able to create his own label after the fall of the Four Heavenly Kings was because he created his own unique style and beliefs in music -- he did not fully reject the market's needs nor did he become a follower of the market. He successfully created an Eason Chan style.

Which is why we will always anticipate listening to Eason Chan.

"Moving On Stage 1" Continues...

night 3

Improvements from night 1 noticed for night 2:

1. Everyone was prepared. The show transitioned smoothly but the volume problem remains.
2. There was definitely less "dead air." Majority of the audience stood on their feet and got into the mood.
3. The rundown was rearranged and everything seemed to flow better.
4. The stages were equally used with the opening stage being used for more than 3 songs.

The usual:
1. As with night 1, Eason's consistent singing continues with his slow songs.
2. For the fast songs, either the music is way too loud or something is wrong with the microphone because the audience can't hear Eason's voice at all.

The show:
After the first show the media focused heavily on the so-called "daring" dance numbers, but that was only 1/10th of the concert. Here are some clips of the other dance numbers and just singing from night 1:

Clips...1...2...3...4...5...6

These clips seem like they're from a professional angle, something television stations would air.

Reaction

At the end of the night the general consensus was: night 1 was okay. Of course, it comes with giving Eason the benefit of the doubt since it was the first night.

The problems:
1. Everyone was unprepared. The show started half an hour late, changing of the stage took too long, Eason forgot his lyrics, there were volume problems, etc.
2. Too much dead air. Eason fans claim there were too many "insiders" purchasing tickets and those "insiders" are the ones that have the front row seats and are also the boring ones (i.e. they sit and don't make a peep of noise throughout.)
3. The rundown was weird. Since we were led to believe it would be a (some-what) dance concert there were too many slow songs. The placement of the songs were all over the place, with many slow songs between 2 fast songs.
4. The opening stage was beautiful but only used for 3 songs while some of the less glamorous stages were used for more than 3 songs.

The surprises:
1. The opening stage, as shown above.
2. The ballerinas, as shown above.
3. A number of songs Eason performed were unexpected.
4. Rearrangements of some of his classic hits.

Going Up -- Prices That Is

Prices are going up for all things Eason Chan.

1. I don't know if you've noticed, but yesasia.com has jacked up the price of Listen to Eason Chan (Limited Edition version). HMV Hong Kong has maintained their price at 115 HKD (almost 15 USD). If my memory serves me correct, here is the price jacking schedule at yesasia.com (in USD):

Pre-order: $17.29
Worldwide release: $19.49
Now: $21.99

It's strange that I actually remember the prices, but I was actually surprised that HMV was selling it at such a low price so I had to check the price yesasia.com was selling it at. Then yesasia.com pushed it up to $19.49 and I had to check the price HMV was selling it at. Then of course I saw that they changed the album picture and the price of over $20 caught my attention.

That's right, you can count on me to remember all the little things.

2. yesasia.com is not the only one pricing Listen to Eason Chan higher, various record stores in Hong Kong are also pricing the album at a higher price. Certain colors are priced higher, such as red and black, because they are in demand.

3. The album is also being auctioned off at Hong Kong's Yahoo!, at higher than retail value.

My question is, why would you purchase it via auction if you can purchase it from a store at a lower price? Unless you want a black one, where supply is limited because of high demand.

4. On another prices going up note, 2 have asked about the tees being sold for Moving On Stage 1.

According to mingpao (10.25.2007), there will be a limit of 300 tees (exclusively made by Silly Thing) that will be sold only at Hong Kong Coliseum up to the whopping price of 580 HKD (almost 75 USD).

As for the tees that say "Listen to Eason Chan" in a bubble (by Pepe Jeans), those are (for now) exclusively made for promotional purposes and given to record store employees to wear as a form of promotion. If you really, really, really want one, consider checking Hong Kong Yahoo!'s auction to see if you can find one. So far there have been 2 (blue & green) of them put up for auction.

Michael Lai, "Crying in the Party"

For his 30th Anniversary Michael Lai & Friends Concerts at Hong Kong Coliseum on October 18th & 19th, Michael Lai Siu Tin 黎小田 did an interview with Nan Fang Daily.

At the age of 5, Michael Lai Siu Tin made his debut in the Hong Kong entertainment industry as a child actor. Now, at age 61, Michael Lai is a celebrating his 30th year as a "master" in Hong Kong music. Once been married to Susanna Kwan Guk Ying and once dated Nancy Sit Ka Yin, Michael Lai has invited them to join him on the same stage at his Michael Lai & Friends Concerts. Most notably having written numerous songs for the late Anita Mui and Leslie Cheung, Michael Lai hasn't written a song in the past 6 years.

When asked why he hasn't written in so many years and why he wrote Crying in the Party this year, he simply answers "Who can afford my songs? I charge a hefty fee, tens of thousands of dollars (10 thousand plus) per song. I don't have excess songs [sitting around]. Also, who am I going to write for? The current Hong Kong music industry needs to learn from the Mainland industry and get their basic skills grounded first. But Eason Chan sings well."

"Listen to Eason Chan" Promotion Overkill

The tees worn by employees in the pictures above are not for sale,
in case you're wondering.

Source: tungstar 10.19.2007

Talk about promotion overkill. I guess Cineoply Records had too much money left from not having a photo shoot for this album that they decided to print out all those posters and tees, just to spend the excess money.

Tickets to Final 2 Shows Sell Out in 3 Hours

Eason Chan's concert tickets continue on their hot streak. Tickets for the final 2 additional shows to Moving On Stage 1 went on sale yesterday and sold out in 3 hours. Eason, who has been busy practicing for his upcoming concerts thanked fans for the quick ticket sales and says "I've been dancing every day, I think I'm exercising too much. I've successfully lost weight and friends who see me have said I look like the Eason of the Capital Artist days." Eason also released his new Cantonese album today and his record company is planning on an autograph function, but since he is busy getting ready for this upcoming concerts they are considering placing the function on hold until after the concerts.

Someone asked if there would be Listen to Eason Chan tees for sale. The answer is: sort of, depending on how you look at it. As for where to get these memorabilia, right now they are being sold at Hong Kong Coliseum (I believe).

"Listen to Eason Chan" final news before official release

Universal Music / Go East Entertainment / Cineoply Records released the mini-site to "Listen to Eason Chan" a day prior to the album's official release. At the site, you'll find the lyrics that aren't included in the limited edition of the album.

Mini-site: Listen to Eason Chan

What exactly does "Moving On Stage 1" mean? 8 colors? English track list?

With 15 concerts coming up and a new album to be released, there are a couple of questions out there that need answers. Eason gives us those answers during 2 radio interviews with CRHK & RTHK last week.

What exactly does Moving On Stage 1 mean?

It can mean 2 things:

1. It has been 12 years since Eason released his first album and at this stage of his career he is ready to move on. Moving On signifies he is ready to put aside what he has done in these 12 years as the First Stage of his career and move on to Stage 2, whatever that may bring.

2. Eason hopes he can bring this concert to other cities, and conveniently putting the number 1 at the end makes it easier (and different) when it comes to naming those other shows. For example: when he did his Get a Life tour the titles were -- Get a Life Live in Hong Kong, Get a Life Live in Singapore, Get a Life Live in Malaysia, etc. If Moving on Stage were to turn into a tour, instead of Live in (city name here), they can just add a number at the end and it will signify how many cities they've toured.

Why are there going to be 8 album colors?

Eason knows this guy name Lui who gives self-designed t-shirts to his friends as gifts. It may seem a little cheap because t-shirts don't cost much money, but the brilliance of it is lies in the form of friendship. When you are walking down the street and you see someone with the same t-shirt as you, you'll know that they're a friend of Lui's and they'll know you're a friend of Lui's because of the t-shirt's authenticity.

One day, Lui designed and gave Eason a t-shirt that had the words "Listen to Eason Chan" on it. Eason wore it out and that was that. Some time passed and Eason saw that Lui made a template, with a variation of 7 colors, of the "Listen to Eason Chan" t-shirts and decided to use the t-shirt logo and the title "Listen to Eason Chan" for his next album cover.

Track List with English? Sort of...

Earlier at CRHK's 903 Love Union program, Eason asked whether it would be a good idea to use all English titles in his upcoming album since the 1st plug, Crying in the Party, was a full English title. I guess they decided it wasn't a good idea. Instead, they decided to do Cantonese pinyin in English. Apparently they're really precise about the English sounds, in hopes that someone who doesn't know Cantonese would be able to pronounce the titles like he/she knows Cantonese.

Official Announcement of Final Additional Shows

on.cc is apparently at the top of their game, getting the news before everyone else. The following is the official announcement of the additional shows, reported by every other newspaper. on.cc reports on it again, apparently they don't want to be left out despite reporting on it already.

A press conference was held yesterday to announce another 2 shows will be added on November 9th and 10th, to Eason Chan's Moving On Stage 1 concerts. All proceeds from these 2 shows, minus expenditures, will go towards funding the 5th East Asian Games, held in Hong Kong in 2009. Tickets will be available for sale beginning Wednesday October 17th. During the press conference, Eason Chan and the East Asian Games organizing committee President Timothy Fok played a friendly game of ping pong.

Eason says no additional shows will be added, saying "Do you think I'm Andy Lau, who holds an average of 20 shows a year? Lets leave some room for the younger generation [of singers] to improve on. Fifteen shows is already pushing my body's limit." Aside from raising funds for the 2009 East Asian Games, Eason hopes he can write the theme song for the 2009 East Asian Games to show his support.

Earlier, Eason showed up at Miriam Yeung's All About Love concert and jumped 2 meters (over 6 feet) down to get onto the stage. Eason was asked if wife Hilary Tsui scolded him afterwards, he responds "She didn't say anything afterwards, but the concert security scolded me. Miriam and I are good friends so [the danger] did not cross my mind. I was confident that I would be able to jump that length, otherwise, I wouldn't have done it."

Elsewhere, earlier in the year, Eason spent 5 days in Sichuan visiting local citizens with eye diseases. Eason realized many those citizens have misunderstandings about eye diseases, which led to many missed opportunities. Eason remembers "There was a 60 year old man who's sight was deteriorating and did not get help in time. He eventually lost his sight and lost his ability to work. There were no lights in his house because there was no need for them. He relied on a monthly 100 RMB from the government to live." He also heart-achingly remembers a mother and daughter who both lost their sight because they did not have the money to treat their vision.

Link: 2009 East Asian Games

It all makes sense now. Kaite Chan said they talked to HK Coliseum and were going to add 3-4 shows, after 3 weeks they announced an additional 1 show. Which was all weird because it took over 3 weeks to announce something that was okay-ed? And when they announced something it was 1 show, down from 3-4? Weird.

Eason gets 3 days rest between his shows on the 5th & 9th. I figure it's not 15 straight nights because they want to make sure the last 2 shows are differentiated from the first 13 shows because they are sponsored by the 2009 East Asian Games instead of Johnnie Walker -- notice the change in color & sponsor name on the background poster above. But it's not at all bad, especially after what happened to Jacky Cheung earlier when he tried for 18 straight.

Eason Gets Called Onto Stage at Miriam Concert

Eason climbs over first row rail to get to stairs

Miriam laughs till she drops

"accidental" trip & kiss

"half an Aaron Kwok move"

Hilary, Eason & Miriam

Saturday night was Miriam Yeung's All About Love concerts' second show. Celebrities in the audience were former Gold Label boss and colleague, Paco Wong and Alex Fong. Eason Chan and wife Hilary Tsui were also present, as audience members watching the show. The concerts continued with planned guests, Edmond Leung and Louis Koo, and an unplanned guest, Eason Chan, showed up on stage.

Louis Koo's appearance continues to be the height of the concerts. With the audience fully aware of what went on the first night, chants of "kiss, kiss" started, making Louis smile. Not shy, the two kissed for a good 3-4 seconds with Miriam kicking her leg back in the process.

When Miriam performed her song 化, she started to cry. She explained that she saw a bunch of her former Gold Label colleagues in the audience and was touched to tears.

Towards the end of the show [after Miriam pointed out that Eason was present] the audience started chanting Eason's name, wanting him to get on stage. With a gap between the stage and the first row [and no way to get on the stage from the first row], Miriam tells her audience "His concerts are coming up, did you guys buy tickets? Don't tell him to come on stage, it's really dangerous." But the audience continued to call for Eason. Not wanting to disappoint, Eason got up from his seat ran down to the first row and jumped 2 meters (over 6 feet) down to the floor, frightening all the workers and Miriam, before walking up the stairs onto the stage.

Once on stage, Eason joked he didn't know what to give Miriam and pointed out that Mr. Koo already gave her kiss, and with his wife in the audience it would be inappropriate for him to give her a kiss. He continued to joke that he can pretend to trip and accidentally kiss her. Eason says he has been practicing hard on his dancing, so instead of singing he'll dance for the audience. He performed, what he calls, "half of an Aaron Kwok move." Eason then praised that Miriam's dancing has improved and got on his knees to show his admiration. Miriam got on the floor to return the gesture before saying to Eason "you are really troublesome."

2 Shows Added to Help Fund the 2009 HK East Asian Games

Eason Chan's upcoming concerts are once again adding shows. This time, the 2009 Hong Kong East Asian Games & the Leisure and Cultural Services of Hong Kong are working together to add 2 additional shows to Eason's Moving On Stage 1 concerts; for the purpose of raising funds for the 2009 Hong Kong East Asian Games. The two shows will be held November 9th and 10th. They have announced that once the expenditures are deducted, the rest of the money will go towards funding the 2009 Hong Kong East Asian Games.

With these 2 additional shows, Eason will perform a total of 15 shows. Eason's manager, Kaite Chan, estimates in 15 shows over 130,000 attendees will be present, breaking Eason's personal concert attendance record. She also hopes that these additional shows will fulfill the fans' ticket needs.

Eason Gives a Suprising Performance in "Brothers"

The cast of Brothers were in Guangzhou promoting the soon to be released film. Andy Lau and Eason Chan performed the theme song together with Eason writing the song and Andy writing the lyrics. Eason explains that because Andy already released his album, the duet will released on his upcoming album, which coincidently will be released October 18th, the same day the film is set to make its theatrical debut.

Over 200 reporters were present at the press conference where many of them caught the private screening of Brothers, and afterwards said Eason's performance will surprise you. Acting as a person who has no experience in organized crime but born, as a younger brother, into a triad family, Eason is able to get into the character of a person who struggles internally with both backgrounds while creating a brotherly bond. After hearing the praise, Eason responds, "My character does have a lot of internal emotions, which is why I felt a lot of pressure when filming with all the veterans. I am happy that I am getting praised, but I feel I could've done better. Hopefully, I can work with these veterans again in the future, so I can learn more from them."

興奮嗎 氣氛夠激昂嗎
隨便叫 隨便跳 這一晚可以盡情吧
聲音再沙 都足以享受嗎
仍是我 陳奕迅 開演唱會不多廢話

Personal opinion: I think they're plugging this song because of the title and it's correlation to Eason's upcoming concerts, but I prefer Mario Party 瑪利奧派對. The intro to the chorus sounds like a familiar song, but I can't seem to grasp the song and it's bugging me. The one thing in this song that I like more than in Mario Party is the lyrics that describe performers, but more importantly it describes Eason.

Eason to Wear 1 Million HKD Worth of Gold at Concerts

Starting October 24, 2007, Eason Chan will hold his concerts, Johnnie Walker Keep Walking Eason Chan Moving On Stage 1, for 13 consecutive nights. This past Monday, tickets to the final additional show were sold out in an hour, followed by an announcement that all 13 shows were sold out. Eason, who is known for his ever changing unique image/style, asked friend Wyman Wong to be his artistic director of the concerts. One of the images Wyman created is a gold accessories filled outfit, combining modern fashion with tradition. Chow Tai Fook (周大福) sponsored over 100 ounces and worth 1 million HKD of gold accessories. Eason put on and showcased the Dragon-Phoenix bangles (龍鳳鈪), Dragon-Phoenix chain & plate (龍鳳鏈牌), Gold Pig chain & plate (大金豬牌) and a specially made, about 1.84 kg, pure gold bicycle pants chain.

Because most gold jewelry is made for women's sizes and because Eason's arms are big, Chow Tai Fook spent a month personalizing an extra-large set of gold jewelry for Eason. When Eason put the jewelry on he laughs, "It is very shiny. If I put on a pair of large gold earrings I'll look like a woman getting married."

Eason says he will have to dance with all this gold jewelry during his concerts, but during practices he is very careful not to move his arms too much because he is afraid the jewelry will fly off. He stops to think about it for a second before joking, "If I act like I'm not careful and fling a piece of gold off the stage during each show, I think the audience will be happy. I don't think the sponsor will blame me." Although Eason's thoughts might make the audience happy, it's easier said than done. The sponsor will provide security to protect the jewelry during each show.

"The Pye-Dog" Wins Another Award Before Release

Earlier, the Eason Chan, Eric Tsang, George Lam & Gia Lin starring film, The Pye-Dog, was awarded top honors at the Japan Asian Marine Film Festival. Recently, The Pye-Dog was awarded the "European Assessed Best Youth Film Award" at The German International Innocence Film Festival.

First time director, Derek Kwok, personally went to Germany to accepted the award and said, "I really want to thank Eric Tsang for giving me the opportunity to have full control when directing. The opportunity he gives to young directors is rare in the industry. When I first found out we won an award, he was the first person I called. When Eason found out we won an award he said he will give me a big gift when I return to Hong Kong." Busy practicing for his upcoming concerts, Eason was not able travel and accept the award with Derek but says, "Derek is a young director with a lot of potential, which is why we are already talking about working together again."
