A “DUO” Wrap-Up

Several days after his DUO concert series ended, Eason Chan went on the CRHK 903 program Vanila Sky (雲妮鍾情) and discussed the 18 shows with DJ Vani (雲妮). Some interesting, insightful, and special moments discussed are as follows.

(1) What happened to his voice? Steroids?

After the first show, Eason visited a doctor and was told his voice was the way it was because of overuse and not because of a cold (as the media reported). He was given antibiotics and steroid tablets (pills), which is a lot less severe than the steroid injection. He was told to take one steroid tablet per day for 2 days and if he still feels his voice isn’t 70-80%, he can take another tablet. When his voice hits 40% or below, he would then need to go back to the doctor for the steroid injection, but was advised to hold it off until the 16th or 17th show as his body will bloat (a side effect of the injection).

(2) Special thanks to Eric Kwok

Eason knows a lot of people were worried about his voice and he received a lot encouragement from his friends and fans. He wanted to especially thank Eric Kwok for his words of encouragement through an email after he watched 2 shows. Eason says that Eric isn’t someone who will only tell you what’s good (he’ll tell you what isn’t good also), he is extremely insightful and he’ll observe situations and give you his opinion.

The subject: Only if they knew.

A portion of the message: When an artist, athlete, or anyone in general gets hurt, they, themselves, take it the hardest. Yes, on a good day, you are supposed to sing well, but on a bad day, when you are hurt and you are currently last in the race, you continued on and raced to the finish line.

Eason never thought of it in that way, but was deeply touched by Eric’s words.

(3) Fully satisfied with DUO, his voice wasn’t even a factor

Eason knows a lot of people were worried about his voice and he knows some fans were disappointed that his voice was not 100%. However, throughout the 18 shows, Eason was never once disappointed, unhappy or unsatisfied because he was fully satisfied with the production of DUO.

Eason states that because everyone, whether it was the stage crew, the band, the dancers, etc., came together as one, the entire production process was filled with positive energy and happiness. Eason asks Vani, “Do you know how hard it is for a team of people to work together and not have gossip (“si fei”)? If merely one person decided they wanted to be in the center of it all, gossip immediately begins, but there was none of that.” Eason was extremely satisfied that this DUO team worked together for one goal and because everyone was in it together, the state of his voice was never a factor because there was so much positive energy.

Vani analyzes, maybe because one aspect wasn’t going well (Eason’s voice) another came together (the DUO team working well). Eason agreed it might have been just that.

(4) Changing keys to match his voice, not a bad thing at all

In Eric’s email, Eric also praised the switching of keys in each song to match the state of his voice. Eason and Vani go into elaborate discussion about changing keys and moods of songs to match his voice. There were many changes throughout the 18 shows because the state of his voice was different each night.

They further discuss how some people view changing keys as a sign of weakness, but Eason feels that is not the case and he has come out of the 18 shows with much more knowledge. Yes, the original key would probably match the song best, but when you change a key you also change the way you interpret the song, giving it a different mood.

(5) Understands the worries about his voice

Eason understands why people worried about his voice. He recalls when Jacky Cheung did his 100 shows world tour, Eason was in the audience during the HK show where Jacky’s voice wasn’t 100% and when he performed 分手總要在雨天. When Jacky performed the line 但雨點偏偏促使這樣遇見 he gave it his all and you heard his voice almost crack during the two words “peen peen” (偏偏) and as a member as an audience, Eason’s thought was “ouch.” At that point, Eason thought Jacky didn’t need to push it because the audience would love it regardless; Jacky could’ve just brought it back and gave it a subtler sound, but Eason also understood that Jacky wanted to perform at his best and perform it to satisfy fans.

Vani concludes Eason probably isn’t as stubborn when it comes to the aspect of performing it the way fans are used to hearing it. Eason then says it is probably because of the experience watching Jacky’s performance that he learned to hold it back for DUO.

(6) Changes in rundown because he couldn’t remember lyrics

Eason hopes they can do a DUO Tour and it was mentioned that they are considering a Part II of DUO. In either case, especially that latter, there would be changes needed, but it would not be a problem because they had already discussed and practiced a lot of DUO song pairings, but because Eason could not remember the lyrics they were cut them out of the rundown.

It was mentioned that he could’ve used a monitor to display lyrics, but Eason admits that it was never an option due to his stubbornness.

(7) Fans first? No, me first. There is no such thing as absolute fairness.

Vani mentioned that the rundown of DUO consists of a lot of songs Eason likes, Eason says that is true. He elaborates and says a lot of people feel that a concert should be created with “what fans want” being the priority, but for Eason, “what I want” is priority. He feels that if he enjoys his performance, the audience will, in turn, enjoy it.

There was also mention that fans would always complain about something, such as fans that paid good money for good seats didn’t get to see how beautiful the stage was and fans that paid less for seats further away got a better view of the stage, or that different nights had longer or shorter encores. Eason says there is no such thing as absolute fairness. One thing that is never fair to him is that he can never watch himself live.

Eason says the people who got the best view of the stage were the 2 member team who were in charge of recording the making of… (for the DVD) because they were recording from all angles and when Eason saw the pictures afterwards, he even thought the stage was beautiful. There was one shot of the stage where Eason risen up on a small stage and it appears Eason was floating in the middle of air because the black structure that lifted the small stage was on was hidden among the black background.

(8) Live versions of new songs better than recorded versions

Vani mentioned Eason performed two of his new songs (無人之境 and 陀飛輪) off his new EP Time Flies. She and Eason then spoke of the fact that his live performances of those two songs were better than the recorded versions. Vani says it was so emotional that even members of the band were crying after his performances. Eason then says even he cried.

Note: Vani brings up that Eason had said in the past (about two year ago) that he continues to release albums so he can continue to perform live in concert. Vani’s mentioning of Eason’s words references that his goal has been achieved because those live performances are what Eason strives for and not merely the recordings.

(9) Enjoyed DUO much more than Moving On Stage 1

Despite his voice not being in good condition for DUO, Eason says he enjoyed the 18 nights of DUO more than the 16 nights of Moving On Stage, mainly because there was a lot less dancing in DUO so he had more energy. He says that about the 8th show of Moving On Stage 1, he had already changed his mindset entirely because he was exhausted. He fully enjoyed all 18 nights of DUO because he had retained energy through each show, which was also why his voice got better as each night went on.

(10) Special thanks to industry insiders who watched

Eason gives a special thanks to Peter Lam (owner of East Asia Music) because it is said that he does not watch productions of other artists aside from those from his own company. Not only did he watch Eason (who isn’t an artist of his company), he had just gotten off a flight and brought with him coconut and almond bird’s nest for Eason.

He also thanks Sau Gor (Wu Fung), who drove to Hong Kong Coliseum to give Eason words of encouragement those days he did not watch.

Jacky Cheung, who watched every show and had not done such for any artist since he did so for Roman Tam in 1996.

He also thanks other industry insiders who attended, some of which he especially invited and he thanks them for taking their time out: George Lam and his son, Teresa Carpio, Poon Yuen Leung, Terence Hui, among others. Luo Da You who sent a flower basket even though he did not attend. Eddie Ng attended but left after a couple of songs, which Eason attributes to as, “the show wasn’t rock enough.”

(11) The rest of 2010

Eason mentioned there are plans to release 2 EPs this summer and a Mandarin album at the end of the year. Also mentioned was IF they were to tour, there would be changes to the rundown for casino venues since they limit the shows to about 1.5 hours (mentioning the US in reference to those casinos) and there would probably not be much change for a Taiwan show because Taiwan fans want to hear his Cantonese songs. (Is this a hint that the US and Taiwan are stops in the DUO Tour?)

"You Are The Legend" - Theme for the 2009 East Asian Games

Remember back in 2007 when Eason held 2 shows of his Moving On Stage 1 concerts to benefit the 2009 East Asian Games to be held in Hong Kong? The theme song has been released, titled You Are the Legend, composed by Peter Kam, lyrics by Chan Siu Kei and produced by the two. The 5 participants from 5 countries performing the song are Chae Yeon (蔡妍) from Korea, Kousuke Atari (中孝介) from Japan, Dadawa (朱哲琴) from China, Eason Chan (陳奕迅) from Hong Kong, and Richie Ren (任賢齊) from Chinese Taipei.

What Happened to Band Leader Pal Sinn's Song?

If you haven't already noticed, Moving On Stage 1 band leader Pal Sinn will not have a song in the upcoming album H3M.

Rumors are circulating that:

Pal wrote a song that has a special meaning behind it and he insisted on having Mandarin lyrics. However, a full Cantonese album with one Mandarin track seemed out of place (as Go East decided, Eason was fine with a Mandarin song) so the song was not recorded.

C.Y. Kong states:

"Mr. Pal Sinn, decided not to take part, even tho production had begun on his song"

Upcoming Song: 路 "Road" - Update

A world renowned brand of whisky (believed to be Johnnie Walker, sponsor of Eason's Moving On Stage 1) has invited singer-songwriter Wu Xiang Fei 吳向飛 to write the lyrics of its new commercial theme song. Wu Xiang Fei was chosen not by coincidence as he once again proved his talent with the upcoming song having the line: "永遠向前，路一直都在" ("always look forward, the road has always been there"), which is already becoming a classic tag line and having Hong Kong and Mainland advertisers referring to it as "amazing."

It is reported that the title of the theme song is called 路 (Road) and will be performed by Hong Kong singer Eason Chan. On the day of the recording a crew member exclaimed that this will be 2008's most popular commercial theme song. This will mark the second time Wu Xiang Fei and Eason will be working together (the first time being Wu Xiang Fei penning the lyrics to Eason's Hippie.) Not long ago Wu Xiang Fei wrote the lyrics to Aska Yang's 誰會改變我, which has immediately become the most different song on Aska's album and has become the most highly praised song by critics. A Taiwanese media outlet has already labeled Wu Xiang Fei as having enormous potential with a bright future.

It is reported that a 60 second clip of this song is available for preview online while the full version can be heard in Eason's upcoming Mandarin album.

"Eason's Moving On Stage 1" Autograph Session

On March 1, 2008, Eason Chan met up with fans for an autograph session for his Eason's Moving On Stage 1 DVD. For the event, children were organized to wear different outfits similar to those Eason wore at his concert.

Eason Admits He Started Smoking Again

With 18,000 fans in yellow rain gear at his Eason's Moving On Stage 2 - Taipei concert, Eason Chan admitted that he has picked up the bad habit of smoking again. He explains that during dance rehearsals of the Hong Kong Eason's Moving On Stage 1 he felt bored and down with the repetition of dancing. The dance instructor saw him being down and handed him a cigarette, which Eason accepted. However, he will not smoke at home so his daughter can avoid a smelly dad. He feels that smoking is a bad habit and is something he should quit.

Personal opinion: Of the 5 clips, 浮誇 is the most artistic in terms of choreography. The dancers are "pulling" the stage forward. 月球上的人 is also nicely done with the softness of the music and Eason's vocals matched nicely with the song's message and the astronaut and girl seen on stage.

"Eason's Moving On Stage 2, 3, 4..."

Eason Chan will be going on a World Tour in 2008, confirmed to be his Moving On Stage Tour, one source cites that there will be 40 shows worldwide.

News Wrap for Week 11.18.2007 - 11.24.2007

Eason Chan was at the rehearsal for the McDonald's World Children's Day event in Hong Kong, where he revealed he will be performing Anita Mui & Leslie Cheung's classic, 芳華絕代, with Joey Yung. "There won't be another person that can perform this song [better than Anita Mui & Leslie Cheung]! I'm just trying to challenge myself and not trying to out-do anyone." When asked whether he will be dancing closely to Joey during the performance (as Anita and Leslie did during their performances), Eason laughs "It depends on what she wears. If she wears a tube top then no, I'm afraid it will fall off. But yes if she's wearing a Qipao (cheongsam)."

Eason says he's learning to set a good example for his daughter by helping others. He says he has a wealthy friend who expressed his interest in donating money to charity and admires his friend's attitude of wanting to donate his money instead of purchasing nice cars. Eason says he has no interest in purchasing nice cars and he has been using his current car for the past 7 years. He further says, when a person gets to a certain age they learn to give to others. If we make 3,000 then donate 100.

Asked whether he will be working with Sammi Cheng on a new film, Eason admits that they are indeed going to work together, they are looking at the script at the moment.

Ivana Wong will be releasing a Mandarin album soon. Ivana reveals that she received the same advice from Andy Lau, Jacky Cheung and Eason Chan, which was "Don't be afraid, just be yourself." She then said Eason gave her advice while imitating her voice, which she found extremely funny.

Eason was spotted having a midnight meal with wife Hilary Tsui and other friends, including Edmond Leung and his girlfriend. After the meal, Eason was seen leaving with another woman in a taxi, leaving Hilary behind. It is then noted that during the meal Eason and Hilary had very little contact and when Eason left with another woman, Hilary didn't seem to care.

Contrary to what reporters originally thought, Eason and Hilary were not have an argument. Eason left without Hilary because he was heading to a meeting in connection with his work related trip to Australia, where he will be heading after the meeting. He purposely met up with Hilary for the midnight meal before the meeting and flight. According to Hilary, Eason will be in Australia for a couple of weeks for work.

Half a month after the conclusion of Eason's Moving On Stage 1 concerts, fake tees have surfaced online as a "special edition," with the Listen to Eason Chan bubble on one side and Eason's Moving On Stage 1 on the other side. These fake tees are using Eason's name, concert name and album name to sell at a higher price than the real tees. With these fake tees, Eason's company issued a statement urging fans to be careful of fake merchandise being sold online.

The only tees released to the public in connection to Eason's concert and album are:
(1) 'Listen to Eason Chan' bubble tees (worn by Eason above) in 8 colors, by Pepe Jeans, for promotional purposes only and are not sold.
(2) Moving On Stage 1 character tee with 'Moving On Stage 1' printed on the back (as shown above in green & white) in 6 colors, by Milk, sold at 220 HKD each.
(3) Moving On Stage 1 college tee, similar to character tee with the addition of 'Moving On Stage 1' in unfilled block print on front, by Milk, in black, sold at 220 HKD each.

According to Siu Yee & Sammy (from CRHK 903), show 12 of Moving On Stage 1 on November 4th was the recorded show. So, I'm assuming that's the show that will be put on the DVD. Though I'm pretty sure they recorded every show, maybe not as in depth though. Anyway, here's the rundown for show 12.

The encore song 親近, as some of you may recognize, is this year's theme song to TVB's Fathers and Sons. Eason chose to sing the song because it was written (music and lyrics) by one of the band members, Kubert Leung; it was also Eason's opportunity to give Kubert a solo and center stage next to him.

Stage 2, Eason's Career After "Moving On Stage 1"

Remember when Eason said Moving On Stage 1 can mean two things? One being that Eason is ready to move on, past stage 1 and onto stage 2 of his career. So what exactly are Eason's plan after Moving On Stage 1?

When his Moving On Stage 1 concerts are over Eason will have a couple of days off so he can spend time with his family, but between those days he will have some other work to do. Afterwards, in December, he will promote his Listen to Eason Chan album in Mainland and will probably film with Sammi Cheng. Eason says his new album, using dance songs as the theme, is a new experience for him, but it is also aimed towards the Mainland market. His future albums will probably focus more on Mandarin music [and market].

Capital Artists' Artists "Move On Stage 1"; Show Fined For Running Overtime

Two nights ago, Eason's Moving On Stage 1's 14 straight shows came to an end with former Capital Artists' artists, Edmond Leung, Miriam Yeung, Denise Ho and Wilfred Lau, making a special appearance. During the final show Eason performed 10 songs for the encore which ended at 12:05 am, going overtime, and being fined a 6 figure sum (presumably 600,000 HKD).

For the final show a special karaoke segment was introduced and was hosted by Eason himself. When it was Deborah Lai's turn to choose a song, she chose 謝謝儂, and it was then when the 4 former Capital Artists' artists went on stage to become Eason's backup dancers.

The 4 of them intended on dragging Hilary Tsui onto the stage with them, but Hilary insisted on not going on stage and they left it at that. But when the audience asked Eason to thank Hilary he complied and said "Thank you [Hilary], you are really really good." Band leader Pal Sinn joined in on the fun when he suddenly asked "How is she good?" Eason responded "You don't need to know. If she's good then she's good, there's no need for a reason." When he performed 綿綿, he said "My wife says this song is boring and told me to cut it. If you guys (the audience) don't think it's boring then it's okay. Sorry [Hilary] I'm going to sing it anyway." Eason got back at Pal Sinn by revealing that he will be getting married soon.

At the post-concert celebration ceremony Eason says he didn't perform too well during the first couple of shows but seeing the positive reaction from the audience and seeing the celebrities taking time out to watch his shows he was extremely happy. Overall, he was satisfied with the concerts.

As for the concert running overtime and being fined, Eason takes a breath before saying "I don't care. I've been running overtime for the past couple of shows, if there's [money] going out then there will be [money] coming in. If it comes down to it, I'll pay it out of my own pocket." When reporters informed him that it was a 6 figure sum, Eason changes his mind and says "Someone will cover it." When asked if manager Katie Chan will cover it, Eason answers "I'll work harder to cover the cost."

Additionally, in April 2008 Eason will be holding concerts in Shanghai and Beijing.

Also, in January 2008 Eason will be holding a concert in Taiwan. This will be the "official" final leg of his Admit It tour. Problems came up when the Taiwan leg of his Admit It tour was planned this year, so the show has been pushed to January.

For those who are wondering why they already held a post-concert celebration with 2 shows left, the final 2 shows are sponsored by the 2009 East Asian Games and not Johnnie Walker.

Eason's Showing Off...

The one thing everyone realizes or will come to realize, whether a fan of Eason Chan or not, is his appreciation for all the behind-the-scenes music crew. While most other singers are trying to justify their win, or trying to explain the false reporting by the media, or trying to explain their hardships over the course of the year in their award acceptance speeches, Eason's first and foremost priority is thanking all the people who work for him behind-the-scenes. Eason has always thanked the composers, lyricists, arrangers & producers because its protocol, but he has begun to thank all the behind-the-scenes production people (who almost never get thanked), the musicians that record his songs and even the production companies. More recently, Eason expressed his hopes of more singers thanking the aforementioned.

All talk and no action means nothing.

"Moving On Stage 1" Fashion by Wyman Wong

Wyman Wong is in charge of the fashion at Eason's Moving On Stage 1's 16 shows where he says, "The biggest theme to the outfits is the clothes of a male singer adding the element of female fashion. This look is me wanting to see Bollywood at Hong Kong Coliseum. This outfit is extremely heavy with the 100 ounces of gold, the bicycle chain itself is about 1.84 kg.

Wyman: This look came upon me when, in July, I unintentionally bumped into an Impasse 13 showroom in Paris. They've helped Dior and Dior Homme design accessories for many years and has now created their own label. I attempted to [without anything to lose] ask them to design a similar outfit for Eason and they actually said yes. The veil is designed by exclusive Dior headpiece designer Stephen Jones.

Wyman: This outfit is Dior Homme meets Valentino. This outfit represents the luxury of the stage and integrating men and women's fashion. We purchased a tens of thousands of dollars' Dior Homme suit and cut it up, keeping only the shoulders and neck piece, then we worked on adding everything else to it. Earlier, Eason went to London in June and left information of his head size along with DVD's of his previous concerts with Stephen Jones, who created this headpiece.

"Moving On Stage 1" Part II? See you in 2010

night 4

As Eason Chan's Moving On Stage 1 concerts continue, it is noted that changes have been and will be made to the stage for each show. Night 4, four to five steps were added to the stairs, the black viewing screen was pushed to the highest possible height in the Coliseum, and the lighting of the stage and the effects have also changed. In effect, making it the highest stage at Hong Kong Coliseum this century. Kaite Chan reveals the production costs from night 1 to night 4 has increased by 10%, totaling to a six-figure sum.

Having 16 shows and still not enough tickets to go around, Katie Chan was asked whether they will have a part II. Katie responds, "There are other singers having concerts. Next year Eason will start his tour and will take some time out during the middle of the year to plan his next album. The first half of 2009, we hope, will be used for filming. We will probably start planning another HK Coliseum concert during the second half of 2009, so 2010 will probably be the earliest you can expect to see Eason at HK Coliseum."

"Moving On Stage 1" Continues...

night 3

Improvements from night 1 noticed for night 2:

1. Everyone was prepared. The show transitioned smoothly but the volume problem remains.
2. There was definitely less "dead air." Majority of the audience stood on their feet and got into the mood.
3. The rundown was rearranged and everything seemed to flow better.
4. The stages were equally used with the opening stage being used for more than 3 songs.

The usual:
1. As with night 1, Eason's consistent singing continues with his slow songs.

2. For the fast songs, either the music is way too loud or something is wrong with the microphone because the audience can't hear Eason's voice at all.

The show:
After the first show the media focused heavily on the so-called "daring" dance numbers, but that was only 1/10th of the concert. Here are some clips of the other dance numbers and just singing from night 1:
